MBA Internship

An internship is a very important part of the MBA process. Typically occurring between a students first and second year, an MBA internship gives a student a chance to put their skills to use in the real world. Also, it serves as an important hiring ground for post-MBA jobs. In fact, many employers hire MBA candidates almost exclusively from their internship pool.

Some tips for finding the perfect MBA internship:

  • You can't start too soon. It is never too soon to start thinking about where you want to apply for MBA internships. It is smart to begin thinking about it even before school begins. When school starts your hectic schedule may leave little time to reflect.
  • Network, network, network. As you start clarifying your goals, be sure to make the best use of your network to help locate an internship. MBA programs expose you to a number of different groups of people who can help with your internship search from professors to students to speakers to alumni.
  • If your dream internship doesn't exist, help create it. If you discover that a company isn't offering your ideal internship position, it is up to try to get the position created. See if you can reach the company through your network connection. Try to get a contact at the company to send call and send your resume. If the company offers internships but not the exact internship you desire, interview through the normal process to explore the possibility of creating a new internship.
  • Begin with the end in mind. Sage advice from Steven Covey that you should particularly heed during your internship search. Since most internships are designed to end with a job offer for full-time employment, don’t apply to internships that don’t fit in with your future plans both from a career basis and a geographic basis. If you don’t want to live in a certain area, it is not a good idea to apply for an internship there.

InternshipGPS: Your Source for MBA Internships!

The MBA Internship truly is one of the most important parts of the MBA process.

As a recent first-year MBA student who was very thorough in my pursuit of any and all opportunities for an MBA summer internship, I quickly discovered how overwhelming the internship search can be when conducting a search in general, but more importantly, when conducting a search online. While there are many job sites and career search engines available, none of them truly focus on the large and consistent target market of internship-seeking MBA students that emerge each and every year. This can be seen in the fact that when an MBA student searches for “mba internships” on popular sites, such as Monster.com, CareerBuilder.com or Indeed.com, he or she must filter through many undesirable search results, including undergraduate internships, MBA full-time positions as well as mass-market job advertisements. This wastes time for the ever-busy MBA student and only adds unnecessary stress to the already-stressful endeavor of identifying internship opportunities.

It was after this discovery that I decided to do something that might make a significant difference for the incoming class of MBA students. I decided to create InternshipGPS, a site on which all MBA internships would be posted after being pre-screened for an MBA education level requirement.

In addition to internship postings, I have also searched and posted some of the best available information and tips on MBA resumes, cover letters, interviews and other internship-related strategies. The great thing about InternshipGPS is that this service is absolutely free!
