The failure essay can be difficult because most people have a hard time admitting to their shortcomings. However, it is important not to give a trite answer to this question. Be sure you are described a legitimate failure that had actual consequences. Some more tips for tacking this question:
- If the failure was a recent failure, it might be hard for you to understand the consequences and implications of the failure. Additionally, you don’t want to convey the impression that you are continuing to repeat the failure. A time lapse gives you the opportunity to show how you have learned from the failure.
- Tell a story that is honest. This is not a question that will make you look like a saint, but will instead help a school to understand that you have self-awareness and the ability to overcome your failures. What impact did this failure have on you and those around you? Were you ashamed of the failure?
- What lessons did you learn from this failure? You should concentrate most of your time and energy on this section of the essay. What was going through your head at the time?
- Be sure to show that you not only learned the lessons from the failure, but that you have worked to not repeat the failure. How have the lessons you learned changed the way you approach your life, job, etc.
